Mahalaxmi Express Live updates: All 700 passengers evacuated safely, says Railways

Mumbai-Kolhapur Mahalaxmi Express has been stranded since early Saturday morning with around 700 passengers on board after heavy rains flooded the tracks.



The train has been held up since 3 am between Badlapur and Vangani in Maharashtra, which is 100 kilometres away from Mumbai, a passenger on board said.

A Central Railways officer said 700 passengers were on-board the train. However, intial reports claimed around 2,000 passengers were stranded.

All 700 passengers onboard the Mahalaxmi Express who were stranded after the train stalled on flooded tracks early Saturday morning, have been rescued, a top official said.

“All the passengers were rescued safely from Mahalaxmi express. They are being provided food and medical aid. There were nine pregnant woman in the train who were safely rescued. One of them is admitted to a nearby hospital for check-up,” Thane district collector Rajesh Narvekar said in a statement.

The rescue operations lasted about three hours after they began at noon.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Navy had launched a massive rescue operation and the first lot of 150 passengers were rescued around midday after the train had been stranded for nine hours about 90 km from Mumbai.

Two NDRF teams from Pune and two from Mumbai with 45 personnel each are involved in the rescue operations while the navy deployed eight rescue teams including flood relief teams and specialist divers. 

On request from the state government, defence forces also sent two helicopters to the spot.

The CR added that a relief train has been stationed at Badlapur to ferry the passengers, along with food, water and medical supplies, besides making arrangements to take the passengers onward to Kolhapur.

While the city's lifeline, the suburban trains in Mumbai functioned with delays of 15-20 minutes on Western Railway and CR, the latter had to cancel services between Karjat-Kalyan (in Thane) owing to floods and waterlogging on the tracks since Friday.

Though the country's commercial capital continued to get intermittent showers and rain, the worst-hit were Thane and Ratnagiri with towns of Ulhasnagar, Murbad, Badlapur, Tiwala, Vangani, Khed, Chiplun and surroundings practically submerged.
